And here it is, the days are starting to get longer, and is that the Sun I see? It's time to get outdoors with practical application of curriculum linked Geography skills in interpreting maps and using 4 and 6 figure grid references. We've got some ideas for you below and resources to help structure your lessons.
Although one of the rainiest days we've seen in a while, yesterday, we welcomed the incredibly resilient Y5s from a school in Carlisle for some Orienteering. I must say, they had such a great attitude. All 56 children completed their routes around Talkin Tarn, using maps to find their way. The site lends itself to school group orienteering as it is contained and easy to navigate with the reliable feature of Talkin Tarn itself! Split into two sessions, our instructors introduced some basic map skills and set the children off in small groups under the remote supervision of our instructors and the school's teaching staff.
Whilst not on our session, the teachers made the most of a trip to Talkin Tarn with some planned Geography tasks of their own.
Not every school in the area has the opportunity to arrange an Orienteering day off-site, whether due to time or budget, so we've created some resources and templates for you to run a similar session at your school. Check it out below!
